About Tim Ringgold:
Hi! I'm a board certified music therapist, author, and retreat facilitator. I'm passionate about teaching people how to reach for music in their toughest times, particularly to help with stress, addiction, and grief. I host retreats once a quarter in either Scottsdale, AZ or Oceanside, CA to help people navigate the valley of grief. Witnessing people's healing from grief is one of the most wonderful things I get to do professionally.
What brings you to Death Cafe?
I've lost both my dad and my step dad, one of my daughters, and even my 5 best friends to death. In each case, I felt the most overwhelming feelings of my life. Being able to faciliate a safe space for people to gather and find support in and around death gives my personal journey meaning.
What would you like your legacy to be?
I'd like my legacy to be that people feel empowered in the face of death to reach for music to ease their transformation from life to afterlife, and that their loved ones reach for music to heal and fully live at 100% with the life they still have.
Thoughts for sharing:
Nuggets of wisdom, in no particular order:
1. We'll all on a race back to heaven, and there's no contract that says who gets back first.
2. All life ends. That's not a problem to be solved. It's finiteness is what makes it special and have value.
3. In the U.S., we are culturally unprepared for death, so WE STINK AT GRIEF. We don't know what to expect, and we don't know how to hold space for others.
4. Hearing is the last sense to go, so say everything to your loved one. They just may not be able to respond.
5. Death and grief are both universal AND unique.
6. Great grief is not a sign of poor faith. It is a sign of great love.
7. It's okay to heal from grief and feel better. It doesn't mean you've stopped loving.
8. When sitting with someone grieving, the magic is NOT in what you say, it's in how you listen.
9. Time doesn't heal grief. It buries it.
10. It's okay to have questions.
