About this Death Cafe
“It’s a crazy life and we only get one.” That was my motto for as long as I can remember, and I have tried to live my life accordingly. Then my sweet grandfather died, my aunt and best friend got breast cancer, COVID hit the world, I discovered two lumps in my breasts, and my husband entered an existential crisis. That’s when I really began to look death in the face and want to talk about dying. But what I found was that a lot of people either didn’t want to talk about it or didn’t have anyone with whom they felt safe enough to have those conversations. But talking about death is really just the flip side of talking about life. That’s why I decided to do a Death Cafe. According to the Death Cafe Founder Jon Underwood, their “aim is to increase awareness of death to help people make the most of their (finite) lives.” So, while I have no idea how many times we are on this earth, or where we go when we die, or even if we die at all or just transition to another level, I still believe we should act as if we only get one go around. And what better way to start doing that than to come to our cafe and talk about dying?
About Kimberly Callaway & Mark Thorpe
Kimberly Callaway
Kimberly has always been a bit of a rebel. She is an effective problem solver and a skilled communicator, collaborator, and motivator with an entrepreneurial mindset in all aspects of work and life. Her desire to live life on her own terms led her to a home waterbirth, to homeschool both of her kids (and those of many others), to help start an out-of-the-box personalized education program for five traditional high schools, and to quit a secure career in her mid 50s without having another job or clear next step.
Kimberly has a B.A. in Speech Communication, an M.A. in English Literature, and a certification in Psychedelic Integrated Studies with specializations in Somatics & Trauma and Depth Psychology. After 21+ years teaching and leading in traditional and non-traditional learning environments–including the homeschool community and at the High School and College level–she currently works as a Guide and Integration Coach for Ketamine Assisted Therapy. She uses a compassionate and personalized approach to help clients navigate challenging insights, emotional breakthroughs, and spiritual awakenings. She organizes and facilitates retreats, leads group integration circles, and offers one-on-one personalized integration packages.
Mark Thorpe
